Casino HD DVD

Lots of love to Universal for bringing us big releases like Casino this early to the high-definition party. After being kinda disappointed by Goodfellas's HD DVD picture quality, I popped in this disk with low expectations. It's ok, I thought to myself. Casino is one of my all-time favourites, and I'm sure it will look better than the DVD.

Boy, was I surprised!

This is a very nice looking HD DVD, and I'm glad restorers and compressionists gave this movie the royale treatment. I often like to compare releases to give people an idea of what to expect, and I would compare this disk to the excellent Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas HD DVD. How appropriate that both films take place in the same setting.

The bright lights of 1970's/1980's Las Vegas come back with a vengeance on this disk, and there is plenty of "3d pop" to go along with it. The transfer itself is somewhat scratched and dusty, but never to the point of distraction. This movie has a very natural and film-like appearance that will please viewers who dislike the overly glossy, digitized look of more recent flicks.

In my opinion, Casino is a must buy.
